Chemical Engineering Director of Industrial Education Dr. Gabriela Nagy was presented the 2019 Presidential Safety Award for her endless efforts to promote safety awareness and practices in Forney Hall and the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering. Dr. Nagy received the award during the Purdue University Annual Safety Chair Meeting on March 20.

Dr. Nagy is the chair of the Chemical Engineering Safety Committee. She provides constant communication to staff and students, ensuring all safety measures are understood and followed. She also hosts multiple safety awareness training sessions to educate and refresh employees and researchers on safety procedures within the School. Along with the Chemical Engineering Safety Committee, Dr. Nagy orchestrates an annual ChE Excellence in Safety Award to show appreciation and support for graduate students contributing to continuous improvement of safety culture. 

“The Presidential Safety Award is a very prestigious award, and I feel honored to be selected as the recipient for this year,” explained Nagy. “I am extremely pleased to see that my efforts in increasing the safety culture in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering are recognized at university level. I consider this award not only personal recognition; but also a recognition of the high standard of safety in our School. I want to thank everyone in our School for their commitment to safety, and I am really proud of the ChE Safety Committee, a group of passionate faculty, staff and graduate students who go the extra mile in making Forney building a safer place for everyone.”

Dr. Nagy was the only recipient this year.

The Presidential Safety Award is awarded to individuals or groups that have made significant accomplishments in improving safety at Purdue University. The award selection criteria is based on someone or a group who contributes new or innovative methods for the implementation of safety, is excellent in safety program implementation, demonstrates improvement in a safety program, has personal leadership in safety, and is consistent with safety performance over time. This award has come to the Chemical Engineering school five times in its seven year implementation.
