ENE and ECE have invited Professor John E. Mitchell to present a special lecture on UCL's integrated engineering program, which was launched in 2014 with the goal of connecting departments, emphasizing project work and practical aspects of the disciplines, while at the same time supporting students’ development of key transferable skills.

Lecture Title:
Experiences of Holistic Curriculum Design in the UCL Integrated Engineering Programme

Abstract
The needs of graduate engineers are changing with university engineering programmes are being challenges to adapt to meet those needs. The job roles of future graduates are inherently interdisciplinary, often value transferable skills and much as they value deep technical knowledge and are begin disrupted or enhanced by AI. In 2014, the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences launched the integrated engineering programme – a major revision to its engineering curriculum that looked to connect departments, emphasise project work and practical aspects of the disciplines, while at the same time supporting students’ development of key transferable skills. This talk will look at the rationale for these changes, the experience and evolution over the past 10 years and discuss the leadership challenges and opportunities of a holistic curriculum review in a research-intensive engineering school.

Biography:
Professor John E. Mitchell is Professor of Communications Systems Engineering and Head of the University College London (UCL) Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and Co-director of the UCL Centre for Engineering Education. Between 2012 and 2016 he was on secondment to the UCL Engineering Sciences Faculty office, where he led the introduction of the Integrated Engineering Programme, a major revision of the curriculum across the engineering faculty. In 2018 he was part of the team was awarded the HEA Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE). He has published widely on curriculum development, active learning and issues of diversity within engineering education. From 2015 to 2022 he was Vice-Dean Education of the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences. Professor Mitchell is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, President of the Engineering Professors’ Council, Vice-President Publications of the IEEE Education Society and was until recently a Member of the Board of Directors of the European Society for Engineering Education and Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Education.
