Title: The Effects of an Acute Noise-Exposure Sporting Event on Audiometric Measures
Abstract: This talk will cover a prospective, within-subject study that examines the immediate auditory effects of high-intensity noise exposure during Purdue University basketball games. College-aged adults with normal hearing completed baseline and post-exposure assessments, including audiometry, distortion-product OAEs, wideband tympanometry, and ARTs, and wore personal dosimeters to quantify noise exposure. Testing occurred within one and a half hours post-game to capture acute changes. Analyses evaluated differences in auditory measures and their relationship to individual noise dose. Data show small, temporary auditory changes in some participants, with variability related to exposure level and susceptibility. Findings improve understanding of short-term noise effects and support the development of hearing-conservation strategies and rapid, portable post-exposure assessment methods.
