Elevator manufacturer Otis Worldwide Corporation has commissioned a study from Prof. Qingyan (Yan) Chen about elevator airflow, how it affects the risk of transmission of the COVID-19 virus among passengers, and how to mitigate those risks through science-based safety protocols. Chen is the acknowledged expert in how airborne diseases spread through indoor air systems.

In times of crisis like the current COVID-19 pandemic, many vulnerable communities in Latin America don't get the aid they need, simply because of faulty or non-existent census data. Two Purdue students have set out to change that. As part of an award-winning entry in a recent hackathon, they are creating a new platform called ComuniMap.

Associate professor Martin Jun has developed a stethoscope-like system that uses audio-based artificial intelligence technology to monitor the overall conditions of machines in factories, hospitals and other locations.

Congratulations to George M. Scalise (BSME '56), who has received an honorary doctorate from Purdue University. Scalise was a pioneer in the semiconductor industry, and also served as executive vice president for Apple Computer.

Many "clean energy" technologies rely on rare earth elements, which are decidedly unfriendly to the environment. Prof. Fu Zhao has been developing lifecycle tools to efficiently use and recycle these elements.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused chaos for many students, removing any chance they had to gain work experience over the summer. The School of Mechanical Engineering saw this need and created the Summer Projects program, giving students the chance to perform meaningful research, and get some financial assistance along the way.

Aaron Afriat, an ME master's student under Prof. Steve Son, has received the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Abe M. Zarem Graduate Award for Distinguished Achievement. His paper proposes a new propulsion system for a Mars descent vehicle.
