PhD student receives data science fellowship for modeling traumatic brain injury

For Kevin G. McIver, a second-year PhD student in Mechanical Engineering, his hard work keeps paying off. Just last month, he was named a recipient of the 2020 ACM SIGHPC Computational and Data Science Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded to underrepresented minority graduate students to help increase diversity in research areas employing computational modeling and simulation. McIver's current research involves modeling and simulation of traumatic brain injuries.

David Warsinger and Guillermo Paniagua have received grants from the Shah Family Global Innovation Lab to study desalination in Kenya, and water metering devices in India, respectively. The Shah Family Global Innovation Lab was founded by Manu Shah (MSME '68) to advance engineering solutions for the developing world.

Perseverance rover to carry the first ever spacesuit samples to Mars

As the Perseverance rover makes its way to Mars, it contains something never seen before on the red planet: a spacesuit. Amy Ross (BSME '94, MSME '96), who designs spacesuits for NASA, put samples of spacesuit materials on the rover to test them in the harsh conditions of Mars.

Purdue "liquid biopsy" technology contributes to successful clinical trial for detection of breast cancer recurrence

Accurately diagnosing the spread of cancer often involves painful and invasive biopsy procedures. The use of a "liquid biopsy," which involves a simple blood draw, has been shown in a five-year clinical trial to accurately detect and monitor certain kinds of breast cancer. The device to perform these "liquid biopsies" was created by Purdue ME professor Cagri Savran.
