Travis Crawford, Three Time DEPS Grant Awardee!

Travis Crawford, a PhD Candidate at Purdue University's School of Nuclear Engineering, has been awarded his third Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) graduate research grant.

Crawford was selected as a graduate scholar by the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) Board of Scientific & Engineering Advisors (BSEA) for the 2023-2024 academic year. The DEPS Graduate Scholars program recognizes exceptional full-time graduate students who are studying high-energy lasers, high-power microwave systems and technologies, ultra-short pulse lasers, and counter-DE weapon technologies.

$190K was awarded in directed energy focused research grants to 24 recipients across the nation. Crawford was awarded the prestigious Dr. Samuel Blankenship DE Scholar Award, which is granted annually to the individual with the top research grant application. As a recipient of the Dr. Samuel Blankenship DE Scholar Award, Crawford received a research grant of $10,000. This is now Travis’ third time being a DEPS graduate scholar recipient earning $10,000 in 2022-2023.

Travis earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Muhlenberg College in 2018 and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from Purdue University in 2020. Now pursuing a PhD in nuclear engineering at Purdue, Travis currently works with the BioElectrics and ElectroPhysics(BEEP) Laboratory investigating intense electromagnetic radiation. His research interests include nonlinear transmission lines, high-power microwave systems, pulsed power, directed energy, and RF (Radio Frequency) bioeffects.

Crawford commented, “I’m excited and humbled. DEPS has shown tremendous support not only to our research at Purdue but to the development of DE systems in general. And I believe that now, more than ever, the development of such systems is of the utmost importance. I’m excited to share my progress with the community in the coming months and cannot express my gratitude enough.”
