Dr. Seungjin Kim, Receives Technical Achievement Award at the 2023 ANS Winter Conference

This annual lifetime achievement award recognizes past or current technical achievements by members of ANS and is the highest award bestowed by the Thermal Hydraulics Division. Dr. Kim was presented the award at the ANS Winter Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 13. He is the fourth NE faculty member to receive this prestigious achievement award.

Dr. Stylianos Chatzidakis Recieved the 2023-2024 Arden L. Bement, Jr. Early Faculty Development Award! 

This annual award was established to provide early-stage research support for a promising pre-tenured faculty member in the School of Nuclear Engineering. Dr. Chatzidakis is the Associate Reactor Director, the Director of the Nuclear Engineering Radiation Laboratory and an Assistant Professor at the School of Nuclear Engineering.

Jonah Lau Invited to Host GEN IV International Forum Webinar on Revolutionizing Nuclear Engineering Education!

Purdue's Women in Nuclear Chapter Receives Second Consecutive Excellence Award from U.S. Women in Nuclear!

Purdue University's Women in Nuclear (WIN) chapter has earned recognition for their outstanding contributions to the nuclear sector. Morgan Smith, Sophia Schick, and Jennah Bari, represented Purdue's WIN chapter at the conference and accepted the award on the chapter's behalf. This marks the second consecutive year that the chapter has received this prestigious accolade.

Travis Crawford, the Three-Time Directed Energy (DEPS) Graduate Scholarship Recipient!

Travis Crawford, a PhD candidate at Purdue University's School of Nuclear Engineering, has been awarded his second Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) graduate research grant. Crawford was among 21 students offered partial awards up to $10,000 in the 2023-2024 term. Applicants for this award were full-time graduate students at U.S. schools who are interested in pursuing or currently studying directed energy (DE) technologies such as high energy lasers (HEL), high power microwave (HPM) systems and technologies, ultra-short pulse lasers (USPL) and counter DE weapon (CDEW) technologies. Crawford received a $10,000 award.

Molly Ross is a 2023 NEA Global Forum Rising Star!

Molly Ross, a Graduate Research Assistant at Purdue University’s School of Nuclear Engineering, has been accepted into the 2023 cohort for the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) Global Forum Rising Stars Workshop in Nuclear Education, Science, Technology and Policy. As part of NEA Global Forum, on September 20-21, 2023, the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), hosted the Rising Stars Program’s first ‘Rising Stars’ workshop.

Adam Dix Wins First Place in the Nuclear Energy University Program's (NEUP) 2023 Innovations in Nuclear Energy Research and Development Student Competition!

Adam Dix, a Purdue University Nuclear Engineering graduate student, won first place in the 2023 Innovations in Nuclear Energy Research and Development Student Competition with his journal publication, "A Novel Friction Factor Model for Wire-Wrapped Rod Bundles."

Jake Marr selected as Purdue Engineering Fellow!

Seven seniors, including Jake Marr, were announced as the fifth group at a ceremony on Sept. 11, all with robust accomplishments and contributions to the College of Engineering. Jake began conducting research as an assistant to construct radiation hardened sensors under Professor Stylianos Chatzidakis. Following contributions in the Radiation Imaging and Nuclear Sensing Laboratory, Marr became interested in novel reactor designs and transitioned to the lab group NuEST, under Dr. Hitesh Bindra. With Dr. Bindra, Marr aided in gathering data on a helium cooled reactor system with plans to observe and analyze a liquid metal cooled model.

The Nuclear Engineering Student Delegation (NESD) has chosen Morgan Smith (BSNE 2023) as a 2023 delegate!

The Nuclear Engineering Student Delegation gives representatives of nuclear engineering students from throughout the United States a platform to discuss issues concerning nuclear science and the community of engineering students. Smith, a Purdue alumnus, traveled to Washington, D.C. September 9th, to meet with representatives and discuss the issues facing nuclear energy, policy, education, and research with key policymakers.

Alumnus Vivek Agarwal and President Mung Chaing Recognized with AAEOY Awards!

Vivek Agarwal (Ph.D 2011) was recognized alsongside Purdue University President, Mung Chaing, with the 2023 Asian American Engineer of the Year (AAEOY) Award! Dr. Vivek Agarwal was awarded the Asian-American Most Promising Engineer of the Year Award.

Jacob Halpern Receives the Prestigious Astronaut Scholarship!

Jacob Halpern is one of three Boilermakers whose work exceeds the classroom and begins a lifelong pursuit of excellence! The Astronaut Scholarship recognizes these students for their remarkable efforts and achievements through hours of research and coursework while in undergraduate studies. As Astronaut Scholars, they will build relationships with scholarship alumni and astronauts, as well as pioneers and leaders in their fields of study. In addition, they recently had a unique opportunity to network with these and fellow scholars across the country at the annual Innovator’s Gala held in August in Florida.

Jacob was offered the Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DoE CSGF), the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) and a $10,000 Scholarship from the University Nuclear Leadership Program (UNLP). Congratulations to Jacob Halpern for his hard work and achievement!

Arvind Sundaram Wins 2021-2022 CRISP Competition!

Arvind Sundaram, Ph.D. candidate in the School of Nuclear Engineering, won the 2021-2022 Center for Resilient Infrastructures, Systems, and Processes (CRISP) Student Research Competition. Sundaram won first place with his presentation titled “Embedded Intelligence with Covert Cognizance (C2),” His presentation detailed, “a future of resilient cyber-physical systems that can self-heal and continue operation in the face of sophisticated cyberattacks without requiring human interference.”

Three School of Nuclear Engineering educators have been recognized as Outstanding Engineering Teachers for their excellence in teaching in 2022. Dr. Ahmed Hassanein and Dr. Lefteri Tsoukalas were recognized for their outstanding teaching in the 2022 spring semester. Dr. Stylianos Chatzidakis was recognized for his phenomenal teaching in the 2022 spring and fall semesters.

Tyler Lewis' research discussed in InnovatED!

Tyler Lewis is a first-year Master's student who obtained his B.S.N.E from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. In his InnovatED article titled "Data in Disguse," Tyler discusses creating the "perfect disguise" for data so that nuclear researchers can analyze its masked form without the ability to reverse engineer proprietary aspects of the data.

Muhammad Rizki Oktavian Recieves the 2023-2024 ANS Alan F. Henry/Paul A. Greebler Graduate Scholarship!

Doctoral candidate, Muhammad Rizki Oktavian, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the American Nuclear Society. Applicants for the scholarship were required to write a personal statement that describes why they are choosing a career in nuclear science/ engineeirng/ technology and how far they would like to continue in their formal education.
