Leo Janert
Biography
Leo is a junior majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in Japanese and global engineering studies, and is actively involved in the GEARE program. He has completed two internships with Tokyo Electron: nine weeks at their research and development site in Hillsboro, Oregon, where he worked as a dry etch process engineer intern, and four weeks at the TML Factory in Sendai, Japan, focusing on the Plasma Solution Technology Department. He is also excitedly preparing for a study abroad program from spring to summer 2026, during which he plans to return to Japan.
Leo serves as the head teaching assistant for OPP’s ENGR 296 course, where he is dedicated to supporting students interested in GEARE and the broader OPP initiatives.
During his internships, Leo significantly contributed to improving the accessibility of information for process engineers by enhancing efficiency in their workflows. He worked on integrating known historical data from sensors in the chamber to streamline recipe adjustments, helping reduce the need for trial and error and conserving resources and time. At the TML Factory, he continued to learn about dry etch systems from a hardware perspective that helped maintain plasma and its states.
Outside of academics, Leo enjoys making crafts, assembling Gundam plastic model kits, whittling, playing volleyball and crocheting.
